About the work
Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo — the most recognised and visited painting in the world. Begun in Florence around 1503 and worked on for over a decade, the picture defines the High Renaissance through its sfumato modelling, atmospheric landscape, and ambiguous half-smile. Acquired by François I after Leonardo's death in 1519, it has hung in the French royal collection and the Louvre ever since, interrupted only by its famous 1911 theft by Vincenzo Peruggia. Painted in oil on a single panel of poplar.
